Weather (When to Go)
Known for its moderate climate all year round, Baywood Los Osos CA has average temps between 50 – 60 in the winter; mid 60 – 70 in the summer. Romantic morning mists are typical most mornings, giving way to sunny afternoons and cool evenings during the summer. Winter is surprisingly clear, with sunny days and cool, clear nights. South of Montana de Oro State Park there are beaches and trails on Diablo Canyon Power Plant lands which are administered by Pacific Gas & Electric. To see the bluffs and beaches south of the state park property you’ll need to sign a liability waiver and then hike the Point Buchon Trail. There is a short loop option near Point Buchon but the entire out-and-back hike is nearly 8 miles round-trip. Many of the beaches are visible from the bluff, but are not accessible down the steep cliffs. However, the beach closest to the trailhead (Coon Creek Beach) is accessible from the Point Buchon Trail.
Morro Strand State Beach is divided into two parts that are in the cities of Morro Bay and Cayucos. The main southern portion of this state park is in Morro Bay between Morro Rock Beach and the rocky point at North Point. At this location there is a small day-use parking area and an 80-site campground at the main entrance at Yerba Buena Street and Highway 1. Another larger day-use parking lot is available on Azure Street just south San Jacinto Street. Morro Strand State Beach is a wide sandy beach backed by shallow dunes. Activities include fishing, windsurfing, beach walking, sunbathing, camping, and bird watching.
Sweet Springs Nature Preserve is a park on the shores of Morro Bay in Los Osos, CA. The preserve is run by a local San Luis Obispo County group known as the Morro Coast Audubon Society. There is no official beach access here, but there is a trail system that begins on Ramona Avenue between Broderson Avenue and 4th Street. At the end of the boardwalk path there is a platform for looking across Morro Bay with Morro Rock towering in the distance. This preserve is a superb spot for watching for birds and other wildlife. It is open to the public daily from dawn until dusk.
