The Best of Kotor Montenegro

The Best of Kotor Montenegro – The tiny Montenegrin city of Kotor is a Balkan gem. Seemingly untouched by time, each cobbled alley leads to a tiny chapel, an empty square or a grand palace, centuries old. There is history here at every turn. From the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon built in 1166 to beautiful Baroque palaces, reminders of the Hapsburg rule.

Kotor’s charms go beyond its medieval walls. A path behind the city climbs up the mountain, offering spectacular views across the city and the bay. Another path follows the bay, revealing pebbly beaches, seaside bars and outdoor restaurants offering the freshest seafood and uninterrupted views across the bay.

The Bay of Kotor itself is well worth exploring too. Bokor is dotted with tiny settlements, many as old as Kotor itself. At Risan, you’ll find Roman mosaics, just off the side of the road. Perast is another picturesque settlement, as old as Kotor, and the setting off point for the indescribably beautiful island church of Our Lady of the Rocks. Kotor is perfect – either as a base to explore this part of Montenegro or simply as a spectacular destination in itself. Kotor Weather – Best Time to Visit Kotor Montenegro

The best time to visit Montenegro is just outside the summer months as Montenegro is so small, the coast can feel very crowded. Peak season is a great time to enjoy the mountainous national parks, however – Kotor on the coast can reach 86°F in summer, whereas inland Cetinje averages a sultry 72°F. Lake Skadar has its own microclimate as it is surrounded by mountains, so not quite as baking in summer but definitely warm enough for swimming. Hikers can ramble happily in Montenegro until November.

Mogren Beach

Making up a particularly pleasant stretch of the Budva Riviera are the twin beaches of Mogren. Stretching for around 400 meters the beaches of Mogren 1 and Mogren 2 are connected by a cave-like tunnel through a small headland. It is worth walking the extra bit to the second beach. Despite being just around the corner from the busy resort town of Budva, Mogren beach remains comparatively peaceful.

Sveti Stefan Beach

The islet of Sveti Stefan (Saint Stephen) lies just a few kilometers along Montenegro’s Adriatic coast from Budva. With such a stunning backdrop the beaches here wouldn’t have to be up to that much to still get the thumbs up. However, with crystal clear turquoise waters, pink sand and backdrop of pine forest and mountains make Sveti Stefan a magical beach to spend a day on the beach.

A small area of the beach is given over to sun loungers for hire, while other amenities include a handful of volleyball nets, fresh water showers, changing rooms, and a modest children’s playground. Though the sand is littered with smaller grade pebbles, it does little to diminish this two-kilometer-long beach, which stretches to 100 meters wide in places. There’s plenty of space for everyone, however, some stretches (and some say the best stretches) are reserved for guests of the hotels that line its rear side before majestic rolling limestone hills develop in all their glory. Amenities such as sun loungers and umbrellas are easy to come by, as are various refreshments. Water sports make the most of the pristine Adriatic waters alongside small fishing boats that bob at mooring just offshore.
