Set in the far south of the Mediterranean, Cyprus has one of the best climates in Europe. Blue skies come as standard, and the island sees a massive 340 days of sunshine a year. Swimsuit temperatures kick in as early as April, when the mercury rises into the low 20s. Things get much hotter in the summer – 30 degrees is normal, although don’t be surprised if the thermometer creeps closer to 40 on some days. Autumn is slightly cooler, so it’s perfect for sightseeing or hiking in the Troodos Mountains. Cyprus gets most of its rain between December and March, but it’s not much, and temperatures are still pretty mild. Here are the best beaches that Cyprus has to offer:
Mackenzie Beach, Larnaca
Mackenzie Beach has received a huge amount of attention the last few years due to the many restaurants, cafes, and bars which operate and which make the area a top entertaining location in Cyprus. Mackenzie Beach is located near the old Larnaca International Airport. The beach has got grey fine sand, with clear and calm waters. It is of approximately 1km length and of 35 to 80 meters width. At the beach various services are offered such as sunbeds, umbrellas, lifeguards and changing rooms. The area is famous for its exciting nightlife while during the day visitors have the chance to eat at one of the many restaurants which range from fish taverns to simple coffee shops. This is Larnaca’s true summer hot spot. As the rhythms of just about every type of music imaginable resonate throughout the area, just take your pick from the array of beach bars, take a seat on a high stool with your tipple of choice, and enjoy all the action!
Onisilos Municipal Beach, Ayios Tychonas

There is a restaurant/café, a small amphitheatre and a coastal footpath. The beach is also popular for beach volleyball, beach tennis, and sailing. Lifeguards with lifesaving equipment and first aid services are stationed at the beach from April – October. The beach has easy access by food, bike or car with parking close by. Onisilos Municipal Beach also offers disabled access.
Fig Tree Bay, Protaras
The most popular beach in Protaras, Fig Tree Bay takes its name from a solitary fig tree that stands a small distance from the beach. According to local legend, the tree arrived with eastern invaders in the 17th century and has patrolled the coastline ever since. Protaras’ expansion as a tourist centre owes much to the beauty of Fig Tree Bay. Drawn to the area by this picturesque coastline, developers lined the bay with hotels, bars and restaurants for the growing tourist population to enjoy. The beach itself is lovely if not a little crowded at the height of the summer season; its fine-grained white sand yielding to deep blue waters that are both shallow and clear. Just a few hundred meters from the beach sits a small rocky island that adventurous swimmers can reach and explore. The bay also hosts a variety of water sports – surfing, water skiing, paragliding etc. – and is serviced by a lifeguard between the hours of 10am-6pm.
Kamara tou Sungarden, Ayia Napa
Kamara tou Sungarden is a beautiful area located right next to the Atlantica Sungarden Beach Hotel, with a breathtaking panoramic view of the crystal clear waters, a must-see view by any visitor who loves discovering the well-kept beauties of the island. Even though the village has developed over the last decades with an large number of taverns, bars, restaurants, shops and vineries, it still holds the Cyprus character. Pissouri Bay Beach is another Blue Flag beach and is defined by its beautiful, clean beach known for the cape Aspro which surrounds it by rocky land. The beach is popular with both the locals and tourist who want to experience all that Pissouori Bay Beach as to offer.
Konnos Bay, Cape Greco
This beach sits in between Ayia Napa and Protaras and is another of Cyprus’ many Blue Flag beaches. Close to the National Forest Park of Cavo Greco, this small quiet bay is great if you’re looking for an away-from-it-all setting. However, it has been known to get busy in the peak months of July and August. There aren’t many waves here, so this beach is ideal for little ones who want to go paddling as the water is generally calm. For this reason it is not a great choice for anyone who likes to surf. This spot is also a popular place to watch the cliff divers. That’s right – these adrenaline junkies leap several meters into the sea on a daily basis. This sport may look incredibly dangerous but it’s an adventure seeker’s dream.
Nissi Beach, Ayia Napa
Located in Ayia Napa, in the district of Famagusta, Cyprus, the Nissi Beach Resort has garnered a reputation as a true paradise destination that can be enjoyed year-round. Situated on a bay with one of the island’s finest white-sand beaches and turquoise blue, clear waters. The beach is nestled among extensive, lusciously beautiful gardens, featuring colorful Mediterranean plants and scented flowers, and is a natural haven for a variety of birds. The white sand stretch here is one of the world’s Top Ten beaches. It gently shelves into the crystal-clear water and stays shallow a good way out, so it’s great for paddling. One end of Nissi Beach is nice and quiet, with the other end a much busier spot that deals in full-on beach parties. Either way, you’ll get a deluge of water sports to play with. Nissi Beach plays to families. You’ll find two go-kart tracks and a good selection of restaurants that serve up kids’ menus and play areas. From the harbor, you can take the Black Pearl pirate ship for a trip to the dramatic caves of Cape Greco. And then there’s Europe’s biggest Greek-themed waterpark, WaterWorld, literally 5 minutes up the road.
Coral Bay, Paphos
Coral Bay is a lively seaside town on Cyprus’ west coast, nestled among banana plantations and vineyards. A long main strip runs through the town center and along the waterside, offering up rustic taverns and a handful of cheery cocktail bars. And when it comes to length, the sandy beach measures up pretty well, too. Coral bay is a true sun-worshiper’s paradise where golden sands lay nestled within a medium-sized cove and are protected from strong currents by the surrounding cliffs. Coral bay offers a wide range of umbrellas, sun loungers and water sport options. It boasts a peaceful white sand beach backed by limestone cliffs. The shallow turquoise waters make swimming super safe on this Blue Flag beach. Shuttle buses run every 15 minutes to the quieter Potima Bay, a large expanse of beach with sun loungers, umbrellas and a couple of beach bars. Controlled development of the area means the resort has maintained the majority of its charm despite its popularity with tourists. A bite to eat is never far either, and a vibrant selection of restaurants and bars can all be found within walking distance.
Akti Olympion, Limassol
Is it possible for a city beach to be any good? A stroll along the promenades of Akti Olympion will answer that question for you with a resounding yes. This beach began life as a thin strip of pebbly sand, and, after much restoration and regeneration work, Limassol’s seafront area has now been transformed into the bustling and attractive city center it is today. Pristine waters and over two kilometers of silky sand make this an attractive spot for anyone wishing to take a relaxing coastal stroll. It is a safe beach too with three fully-equipped lifeguard towers on duty from April through November. At the beach you will find restrooms, lockers and shower. There is also ramps for wheelchair access. There are ample sunbeds and umbrellas. If you get tired of sunbathing and water sports or simply swimming, you can walk the pedestrian walkway or ride your bike on the special bicycle path, stopping for coffee at one of the many coffee shops that line the path. Nearby you will find an abundance of restaurants, bars and other entertainment venues.
Another coastal spot which is often less well known among tourists is Latchi beach. A mixture of powdery sands and small pebbles form the coast here, and the lack of excessive facilities mean it is the perfect location in which to bring your own umbrella and enjoy a picnic. This beach is ideal for snorkeling due to the crystal clear waters. The waters are clean and undisturbed; sit back, relax and take in all of the impressive natural scenery which surrounds the shore. Latchi beach is a short stroll from the harbor area along the main resort road. . There are many taverns close by all with restroom facilities.
Among the busiest beaches in Protaras, Protaras Beach has a long strip of fine golden sand and shallow waters which are ideal for snorkeling. Awarded a Blue Flag accreditation for its cleanliness and water quality, the beach is a short distance from the resort center and easily accessible on foot. In addition to the various water sports on offer, boat trips exploring the Famagusta coastline can be taken from the beaches jetties. For the less adventurous, sun beds and parasols are available for hire. The beach is patrolled by lifeguards between the hours of 9am-6.30pm, and has disabled access and toilet facilities on site.
The beach is a small sandy cove with clear water which slopes gently and doesn’t get deep until quite a way in so is perfect for families with small children. There are water sports available at the far end of the cove – also a lifeguard station beside it. There is a restaurant ‘Kalamies’ – also a small kiosk selling drinks & ice creams etc. Toilet facilities available. Sun loungers and umbrellas available for hire. There is also a Volley ball net. Kalamies Beach is directly in front of the Golden Coast Hotel.
340 days of sunshine?! Gotta pack my bags, see you there! *smile*
I am a huge beach fan and have visited quite a good amount of beaches during some holiday trips. I was in Denmark, Netherlands, Spain, Turkey, and Latvia. What they all had in common was lots of water and sand (obviously). But the quality in regards to services like sunbeds, umbrellas, lifeguards, entertainment etc. varied of course.
This is why I think articles like these are very helpful before heading out to a certain destination.
My personal choice would be Nissi Beach Ayia Napa. First of all I like the light blue color of the water and secondly the white sand stretch in between. It looks truly like paradise destination. In addition to that I think I would feel very comfortable in the gardens that surround the beach. I think this is a great combination!
Put a hammock in between the beach and the gardens and my 365 days holiday is complete *smile*
Until there, all the best,
Thank you so much for visiting Beach Travel Destinations and taking the time to leave me such great comments. I am glad you enjoyed!

Most of the beaches you have reviewed looks enticing. But, I’m gonna have to pick Kalamies beach this time, due to its clear and shallow waters. It also eases my mind to know that there is a lifeguard at the water sports area.

Are the hotels situated right near the beaches? What recommendations do you have for some affordable accommodations in Cyprus that are near the beaches?
Yes, there are quite a few beach resorts that you can stay at. I really couldn’t recommend one personally, so I always turn to Trip Advisor when I need a good recommendation. I like to look at the reviews and compare them first and then look for the best deals. Thank you for visiting the best Cyprus beaches!
