Visit beautiful Ventura! Ventura is a California coastal city, northwest of Los Angeles. It’s known for its beaches, like San Buenaventura State Beach, with a long, wooden Ventura Pier. Surfer’s Point is popular for surfing and windsurfing. Landmarks on downtown’s Main Street include the Mission San Buenaventura, with its 1809 church. Boats depart Ventura Harbor for Channel Islands National Park, a habitat for rare island foxes and scrub jays.
In many ways, Ventura still feels like a small town; the old-fashioned Main Street, wooden pier, historic buildings, but Ventura has a wide variety of things to do. Ventura Harbor offers an array of water activities including harbor cruises, stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, and whale watching. It’s also the gateway to Channel Islands National Park and Marine Sanctuary just 14 miles off the coast that offers world-renowned diving through kelp forests. The park, known as North America’s Galapagos because it is home to 150 endemic species, is also a spectacular place to hike, camp, kayak, and view wildlife. Back on the mainland, Ventura Harbor Village surrounds the marina with opportunities to shop local, eat freshly-caught seafood, and view original artwork at galleries and studios.
Ventura has fantastic weather year-round, earning it descriptions like “the land of eternal spring.” Whether you want to surf, paddle board, kayak, jet ski, catch a professional surfing tournament, Ventura has it all. Enjoy the many wonderful beaches of Ventura, (you’ll find a list here), then visit Ventura!
Ventura Weather – When to Visit
The best time to visit Port Hueneme is from March to May or from September to November. Temperatures are fairly mild year-round, hovering in the 60s and 70s, but traveling in early spring or fall ensures you won’t be fighting crowds and rates will be less expensive. Summer welcomes most of the city’s annual events and it’s also peak season if you’re looking for a beach vacation, but you’ll have to contend with more crowds. If you’re traveling during the winter months, make sure to pack an umbrella because Santa Barbara sees most of its rainfall between December and February. No matter when you decide to visit, pack layers as the as morning and late evening temperatures tend to be much cooler than the daytime high.
Ventura’s Best Beaches

Ventura State Beach is located right next to the pier and is the most popular beach. With a full playground right next to the pier, and one of the best fish taco places right on the boardwalk, this beach feels like summer all year long. Take a stroll along the pier, and take your rods if you want to fish. The promenade and connecting bike path is popular for easy cycling for the whole family.
Marina Park Beach
Marina Park is a great way to spend the day for the whole family, dogs included. There is an extended grassy area that’s great to play on, a full pirate ship, and dogs are allowed on leash. Enjoy your lunch at the picnic tables and BBQ grills. There is also a fishing dock, so cast your line and catch your lunch!

Pierpoint Beach
Pierpoint Beach is a local’s spot at the end of Seaward Avenue. You can enjoy authentic seafood, frozen yogurt, cafes, and pubs. .
Mother’s Beach (Harbor Cove)
This beach is the safest in Ventura with lapping waves and soft sand dunes that are great for kids to play in. This beach is close to the Ventura Harbor, restaurants, cafes and shops. The Channel Islands Visitor’s Center is across the street and you can hop on a ferry out to the islands, or rent a paddle board.
.
.
Surfer’s Point
Surfer’s Point is the best place to surf , or just sit and watch. The sand dunes make for pleasant walking along this beach, and it’s all only a few seconds jump over the fairgrounds, and a few blocks from Downtown. Channel Islands trips are definitely worth planning ahead when possible because ferry spots, guided excursions, and camping permits can fill quickly, especially during spring, summer, and holiday weekends. Booking early helps secure your preferred departure time and gives you more flexibility for weather conditions, which can occasionally affect crossings. Many travelers pair an island day with time around Ventura Harbor, downtown Main Street, and local beaches to create a well-rounded coastal itinerary. The combination of marine wildlife, coastal scenery, outdoor activities, and relaxed California beach culture makes Ventura a surprisingly strong destination for both short getaways and longer coastal vacations.
Ventura looks like such a dreamy coastal escape! I love that it still has that small-town charm with the pier, historic buildings, and Main Street, yet offers so many things to do—from surfing and paddle boarding to harbor cruises and even ferries to Channel Islands National Park. The beaches you highlighted all sound so different too, from the lively Ventura State Beach to quiet nature spots like McGrath Beach. It’s great to see there are kid-friendly beaches, surfing spots, and peaceful stretches all in one destination. Do you think Ventura is better for a relaxing beach vacation, or is it more of an adventure-focused getaway? And if someone only had time for one beach and one restaurant, which would you recommend as the must-try experience?
Thanks so much for your thoughtful comment! One of the things that makes Ventura so special is that it truly works for both types of travelers. If someone wants to unwind, there are calm beaches, harbor views, gentle walking paths, and that laid-back small-town feel. But if you’re craving adventure, the surfing at Surfer’s Point, kayaking in the harbor, and trips to the Channel Islands add plenty of excitement. If you only had time for one beach, I’d suggest Ventura State Beach because it offers that classic pier atmosphere, great views, and easy access to food and the promenade. For a restaurant, Beach House Fish on the pier is hard to beat—fresh seafood paired with ocean views feels like the perfect Ventura combo. Are you thinking of planning a trip soon, or have you visited before?

That’s such a wonderful question — and I love that you’re thinking about visiting the Channel Islands! 🏝️ If you have the time, I definitely recommend spending at least one night camping on one of the islands to really soak in the quiet beauty and starry skies. But even a day trip from Ventura Harbor is unforgettable — you can hike, kayak through sea caves, and spot wildlife like seals and dolphins. It truly feels like a hidden world just off the California coast, so either way, it’s absolutely worth the trip!
Ventura sounds like such a hidden gem! I love that it still has that small-town charm while offering so many things to do. The idea of taking a boat out to Channel Islands National Park really caught my attention—have you done that trip yourself? And out of all the Ventura beaches you mentioned, which one would you say is best for a first-time visitor?
You’re so right—Ventura really does balance small-town charm with big adventures. Yes, I’ve taken the boat to the Channel Islands and it’s incredible! The scenery, wildlife, and hiking trails really make it feel like you’ve stepped into another world. As for beaches, Ventura State Beach is a great first stop—it’s right by the pier, very family-friendly, and has that classic California beach feel. But if you want a quieter, more local vibe, Pierpoint Beach is also a wonderful choice. I think you’d love starting at the State Beach, then branching out from there!
