Alaska Shore Excursions FAQs

Do I need to book Alaska shore excursions in advance?

Yes. Alaska excursions often sell out, especially helicopter tours, whale watching, and dog sledding. In addition, booking early gives you better times and more choices. Some tours may still be available onboard, but popular ones fill fast.

Is it better to book excursions through the cruise line or independently?

Both options work well. Cruise-line tours offer easy scheduling and guaranteed return to the ship. However, independent tours often offer smaller groups and more flexibility. Compare prices, timing, and cancellation policies before choosing.

What are the most popular excursions in Alaska?

Top picks include whale watching, glacier helicopter landings, dog sledding, scenic train rides in Skagway, and wildlife cruises in Kenai Fjords. Also, many travelers enjoy cultural tours, nature walks, and bear-viewing trips.

Do I need special clothing for Alaska excursions?

Layered clothing is key. Wear moisture-wicking base layers, a warm mid-layer, and a waterproof jacket. Additionally, sturdy shoes and a hat or gloves help on colder days. Weather changes fast, so pack smart.

Can I do excursions if I have limited mobility?

Yes. Many Alaska tours are accessible or low-impact. For instance, scenic drives, cultural centers, easy harbor tours, and whale watching boats often work well. Check accessibility details before booking to ensure the right fit.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Alaska weather can change quickly. Most tours run in light rain, but flights and glacier tours may cancel for safety. If that happens, you will receive a refund or be rebooked when possible.

Is wildlife guaranteed on excursions?

Wildlife sightings are common, but never guaranteed. Even so, Alaska is one of the best places on earth for spotting whales, eagles, bears, sea lions, and more. Every port gives you a chance to see nature up close.

How long are most shore excursions?

Most tours range from 2 to 6 hours, depending on the port and activity. As a result, many fit comfortably into your cruise schedule while still leaving time to explore town.

This guide makes me want to book an Alaska cruise immediately! I love how you included such a variety of excursions — from thrilling glacier landings to peaceful wildlife tours. The helicopter and dogsled adventures sound absolutely unforgettable, and the wildlife viewing options in Anchorage and Haines would be a dream for nature lovers like me. It’s great that there are choices for every activity level too. If someone wanted a good mix of adventure and scenery without it being too extreme, which excursion would you personally recommend as the perfect balance?

That’s such a great question! For the perfect balance of adventure and scenery, I’d recommend the Juneau Whale Watch and Mendenhall Glacier Combo Tour. You get the excitement of spotting humpback whales up close along with the incredible beauty of the glacier — all in one unforgettable day. It’s active without being strenuous, and the views are simply spectacular. Another great option is the Kenai Fjords Wildlife Cruise out of Seward — it’s relaxing, yet you’ll still see glaciers calving, whales breaching, and sea lions basking on the rocks. Both really capture the best of Alaska’s wild beauty!

Wow, these excursions sound incredible! I’m especially drawn to the helicopter glacier tours, but I’m a little nervous—are they safe for first-time flyers, and would you recommend them over something more relaxed like the scenic railroad in Skagway?

That’s such a great question! The helicopter tours are very safe—pilots are highly experienced, and the ride is smoother than many expect. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see Alaska’s glaciers up close, and walking on the ice is unforgettable. That said, the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad is also amazing, especially if you’d prefer a more relaxed pace with stunning mountain views. If you can, I’d recommend doing one adventurous excursion (like the glacier tour) and one scenic/cultural option (like the railroad) to get the best of both worlds!

You provide some great pics of things to do there in Alaska. The helicopter ride interests me as well as the cruise to see the glacier. Too cold for me to do any snorkeling in Alaska though.

I lived in Alaska for 22 years, and I never snorkeled, nor do I want to. I don’t care how much apparel they want to put on, the Alaska waters are just too darn cold for my blood. But the beauty, the wildlife, glaciers, and everything else, is truly wonderful! Thanks for visiting!

Whoa lol, I didn’t want to say wow like all the others. When you get there how much time do you average on land versus on the cruise? This talks about all the shore excursions but seems like you may not be able to get back on board the ship with everything there is to do. My favorite would probably be seeing bears while in a plane up above. But then there is the train that seems pretty nice too. I do find one thing a little funny, the beaver clan house sounds made up for tourists.

Hi Eric, and thanks for visiting. The Beaver Clan house was not make for tourists, Alaska is just very unique. You do get all day for a shore excursion, but obviously, some last longer and if you pick an excursion that goes all day, then you can only do the one. The wildlife in Alaska is amazing, and really, whether you are flying above in a float plane, doing the glacier tour, or train….you will see wildlife…guaranteed.

Hi, Awesome collection of things to do in Alaska! I’ve been there a few times to visit family and it’s really so beautiful that you cannot miss getting out and exploring the wilderness you’re there. Don’t know if they still have it but we took a day and went panning for gold once when I was there. If you found any you got to keep it but we weren’t quite that lucky.
