Fishing is BIG in this small town. The surrounding Gulf waters brim with fresh catches, and fishing tournaments fill our event calendar almost every weekend during the summer months. There’s plenty for nature lovers to love in ‘Port A.’ More than 300 species of birds visit us annually, making us a popular destination for avid birders. With six birding sites on the Great Texas Birding Trail, there are plenty of opportunities to add to your ‘life list’ or just enjoy the myriad of wildlife. Board the passenger ferry or jetty boat from their marina and discover San José Island, an undisturbed, natural haven for seashell seekers and nature enthusiasts.  Visit our great Texas beaches here or on Pinterest.

Weather (Best Time to Go)

Of course peak-summer will be the most expensive time to come but summer regularly provides great beach weather and an excellent tan during this time. The seasons just before and right after “peak season” are dates that are just a little earlier or a little later in the summer. This advantage not only gives you more desirable rates but usually more private and exclusive time in the sand and around the town of Port Aransas and usually with exceptional weather. Spring, fall and even winter, which is known for its exceptional sunsets, are beautiful times of the year to visit Port Aransas and Mustang Island as each one has their own claim to the Port Aransas beauty.

If fishing is the main reason for your Port Aransas trip, staying near the marina is usually the smartest choice. You’ll be steps away from deep-sea fishing charters, bay fishing guides, and offshore excursions into the Gulf of Mexico, which makes early morning departures much easier. Many anglers targeting redfish, speckled trout, snapper, and kingfish prefer marina-area lodging for convenience and quick access to the Corpus Christi Ship Channel. However, if you love surf fishing or casting a line from a public pier, staying near Horace Caldwell Pier puts you right by one of the most popular fishing spots on Mustang Island. Both areas offer classic Texas Gulf Coast scenery and easy beach access, so it really comes down to whether you’re planning offshore adventures or sticking to pier and surf fishing during your stay.

Port Aransas sounds like such a fun and relaxed coastal escape! I love how it combines small-town charm with endless outdoor adventures—from beachcombing and kayaking to fishing and birdwatching. The local vibe really shines through in spots like The Gaff and Stingrays Taphouse, and those wide sandy beaches sound like pure paradise. I didn’t realize it was such a great place for wildlife, too—over 300 bird species is amazing! Do you think it’s best to visit in late spring or early fall if I want good weather but fewer crowds?

Yes, you’re spot on—that’s the perfect time to visit! Late spring (April–May) and early fall (September–October) offer warm, sunny days without the peak summer crowds or high prices. The beaches are peaceful, the Gulf water is still great for swimming, and local restaurants and bars have that laid-back island energy without being packed. Plus, fall sunsets in Port Aransas are especially beautiful—definitely worth catching from Horace Caldwell Pier or while relaxing at The Gaff!
