There are so many choices on the market today, so deciding between the best luggage brands can definitely be a challenge. There are some considerations in recommending the best luggage brands, such as design, warranty, and quality of materials ( like the zippers, wheels, and handles). The best luggage brands should optimize interior space and offer sizes that meet the needs of the traveler and airline requirements. Price should also be a consideration. No matter what your budget, you can find a good set of luggage. I have taken into consideration brands based on the value, as well as quality and design. Here are my top 10 best luggage brands (and then some :), base on value as well as quality and design ($-Low Price Range, $$-Mid Price Range, $$$ High Price Range):
$ – $$ American Tourister
For good quality at lower- to mid-range prices, American Tourister is considered the best luggage brand for travelers who do not travel frequently enough to need extremely durable or luxurious luggage. Owned by Samsonite, this brand includes soft-side and hard-side luggage in a variety of bold colors and finishes, including bags for kids (and adults!) featuring favorite Disney and Marvel Comics characters.
$ – $$ Samsonite
One of the best-known luggage brands, Samsonite started over 100 years ago as a trunk manufacturer. They have a wide range of products to include hard-side and soft-side bags, garment bags, backpacks, and travel accessories. Four-wheeled spinners and gliders are also included in their product line. Prices are in the low-to-middle price range, and offer durability, style, and value.
This is a favorite of flight crews, and offers excellent quality, value, and durability. These were invented by an airline pilot who recognized the need for wheeled luggage. The popular Maxlite series includes soft-side and hard-side styles in a range of colors, two-wheel roll-aboard or the four-wheel spinner. The just-launched Platinum Elite line, their high-end option comes with premium fabrics, leather trim, and a “Worry-Free” lifetime warranty. You’ll find Travelpro to be a mid-priced luggage brand.
Delsey was founded in Paris in 1946 as a producer of leather camera cases. They expanded into the luggage business in 1970 with their hard-case line. They still specialize in hard-side bags, creating the first style with one main compartment similar to soft-side luggage . They also offer stylish and colorful soft-side bags, garment bags, and duffels. They offer excellent durability and value in the middle price range.
$$ – $$$ Eagle Creek
This rugged luggage line has a casual, outdoorsy feel with an emphasis on durability and functionality. Tough, weather-resistant coated polyester fabrics, heavy-duty wheels, and puncture-proof lockable zippers make it ready for rough treatment on long trips, and the company backs it up with its “No Matter What” lifetime warranty. Above mid-range in price, practical additions include a key fob with bottle opener and add-a-bag straps.
$$$ Briggs & Riley
They are known for their lifetime guarantee, and have introduced several innovations that make packing easier and more efficient. Briggs & Riley bags outside-mounted hardware provides more interior area and a flat packing surface, so fewer wrinkles. The brand’s exclusive CX expansion and compression technology gives you more packing space, and then returns the bag to its original size. Founded in 1993, prices are a bit higher than mid-range, but the quality and warranty (which applies even in the case of airline wear-and-tear) offers a great value.
Tumi is a distinctive luxury brand that focuses on quality, durability, style, innovation, and customer service. Their prices are above mid-range and includes complimentary monogramming, onsite repairs, lost luggage tracking, and options such as the “add-a-bag” system, which makes it convenient to carry extra items. Tumi’s fashionable luggage and accessories are available in hard-side, fine leather, and abrasion-proof ballistic nylon.
The company that makes the Swiss Army Knife, Victorinox, strives for the same versatility and functionality in its luggage. They offer a variety of styles in hard-side and soft-side luggage. Prices are higher than mid-range. They are known for quality and durability, and is a popular and respected brand.
The company’s new tagline, “Since 1877,” is a reminder of its history, dating back to the days of brass-trimmed steamship trunks and glamorous railroad travel. Today, Hartmann remains committed to style and quality, along with the latest technology in its Glider line of rolling bags. The Hartmann look is classic and luxe. After all, James Bond carried the Skymate suitcase in 1954’s “Live and Let Die.” Who could be classier than 007?
Founded in 1898, Rimowa is recognized for innovation in materials, having created the first aluminum trunk on the market in 1937. The company was also a leader in its use of lightweight and durable polycarbonate materials. Recognizable by its distinctive parallel grooves, premium-class Rimowa luggage is stylish and practical. “Handmade meets high-tech” is the brand’s motto and mission.
Wow, what a nice list of luggage! I was looking for a luggage for my next trip to America this year. I need one with wheels so I can grab it with me everywhere. It is so much easier to have this for traveling. I really like the Samsonite, they look very strong and I’ve heard good things about this brand.I’ll take a look at this language on Amazon right now!
Thank you for this excellent post!
Samsonite is a great choice 🙂 Great value for the quality you get. I am glad you found the perfect luggage for your next trip! Thanks for visiting the top 10 best luggage brands.
What a comprehensive review of luggage brands, this makes choosing one less daunting. Personally i prefer to buy luggage carriers that are pocket friendly, strong, and still stylish, i see many brands here that can work for me and find this article very helpful. I also like that many of these brands have a life time warranty ,that crowns it for me, thank you for the good work because i now know exactly what to get when travel time comes.
Great Florence, there are definitely a lot of great choices. Please let me know what you decide on 🙂 Thanks for visiting the top 10 best luggage brands.
I like your page and didn’t realize there is so many to choose from. I have a couple Moor that I’ve used for a couple trips but the family has grown and next time I take a trip I will have to get new ones. Its great that I will have your review when I’m ready to purchase a family size set of luggage.
Wow, I am not sure what kind of warranty the Moor luggage brand has on them. I think you find what you are looking for here. Thanks for stopping by!
I wish you would have focused a bit more on the low price range. The reason is since my husband is disabled, we don’t get to travel but about once every few years, but when we do, we hit at least 3 different locations. Is there a good brand of luggage that won’t get used much, but when it does, it has to be durable? Great info! I love to travel and wish we could do it more.
Yes, unfortunately if you want a good brand that will be durable, it is not going to be super cheap. Any good luggage will cost a little bit extra than going to the local discount store. But it will last a LOT longer. Thanks for visiting Sue and taking the time to leave comments.
Do price ranges on all of these brands vary as a result of the size of the luggage that is being bought?
I’d definitely like to purchase a Samsonite or American Tourister bag because of its low cost, but would that mean I’d be purchasing their smallest size luggage bag?
Also, could you recommend a size that is best depending on how much a person travels?
Yes, the size does result in a lower price usually. Most people find a 25 to 26″ luggage to be a good size to pretty much fit everything. This size is usually reasonably priced as well. This Samsonite 24″ is a great buy at $100 off the normal price, and being a hardside, it will last a long time. This 28″ American Tourister is going to give you a little extra room, and is about the same price. Still a great piece of luggage that will last. Hope this helps Jessie. Thanks for stopping by.
This time of the year, is one where my family and I, really look forward to.It’s special as it’s the first time that we are going to travel overseas. Fortunately though, we are going after the New Year and Christmas festivities. Anyway, we are in the market for a good luggage set for a family of family of four.
Your list is really helpful and made things so much easier for us.We most likely are going for the Samsonite range. However, we are not sure whether or not to go for the hard casing or soft casing one’s. What would you recommend?
Which ones are more popular?
Hi Roopesh, and thanks for visiting the Top 10 Best Luggage Brands. In my opinion, the hardside is the way to go. For one, your personal items inside are going to be protected more, and the luggage last longer and stays nice longer. You can’t go wrong with the Samsonite. Please let me know if you have any additional questions.
Hey Leahrae, good article. I believe that your article is going to come in handy when I do my traveling within the next few months, I have always been the type of person who wants to pack one suitcase with everything that includes toothbrush and all. Your luggage options are all really good which makes it hard for me to make a decision. Which among those luggage options do you have? Anyway, your article was a great read. Good job!
I have the Delsey hardside luggage and love it. I tend to change mine out frequently…not because it wears out, but I just like change. They have a lot of color choices and luggage options that I like 🙂
I’ve always loved the brand, American Tourister! Not only do they offer bright colors (I love bright colors) they also make high quality luggage bags that are well worth the investment! Some of the brands you mentioned I’ve never heard of before, but in the future, when I travel more (hopefully) I’ll need to purchase more luggage in order to bring more things with me! Thanks for taking the time to share these awesome luggage brands and thanks for giving me the travel bug again!
You are doing good with American Tourister. They are definitely a good quality brand. I have always used Delsey for the same reason, I love the colors and the design and just the overall look. Thanks for stopping by!
This is so great! My husband and I have luggage from when we got married 16 years ago! It was part of a wedding present. I mean, it’s done its job throughout the years, but it would be nice to upgrade. It wasn’t great luggage to begin with and now it’s getting all raggedy.
I don’t know a lot of these brands. Samsonite is one I know, of course. And Tumi is also one I hear about a lot. It looks like any of these will do a great job. If you had to choose one to go with, what would it be? I’m so bad at making decisions! haha
I love Delsey, and that is the luggage I have. I love the look of them and the features. Any listed are great, all personal preference I guess. I just think Delsey is an all around great luggage brand 🙂 Thanks for reading!
I prefer Samsonite when it comes to my bags, they can be a little pricey sometimes but the quality and styles speak for itself. I haven’t heard much of these other brands, so I can’t say much about them.
I do want to invest in a hard shelled suitcase but I haven’t been traveling anywhere recently sadly enough.
I love the hardside luggage. I own Delsey hardsides and I love them. I really like the designs they have available (I’m female LOL) as well as the features. Any on this list is going to be a great choice. Samsonite seems to be the popular one.
Great post and good info.
In my opinion, Samsonite is the best one when iy comes to luggage, we have one for years now and there is a scratch on it yes, but really, you can do some many things with it, it won’t break.
The price isn’t cheap, but you pay for quality.
Also the space you have and the comfort is the best for our travels.
Thanks for sharing it with us!
Ps: I’m going to show this to a friend, he doesn’t believe in Samsonite so can choose one of the other ones you recommended.
Samsonite is good, and it really is at the lower end cost wise. So if you look at other luggage, Samsonite is cheap 🙂 I love Delsey personally, I guess I like the designs and colors and the interior of the luggage. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment.
Samsonite is my choice when it comes to traveling there suit cases are made durable and tough. they may be a little more expensive. There are others to choose from out there but this is my choice.when I travel this is what I will buy.
Thanks for this information on luggage.
You are welcome, and it is a good choice because it is actually one of the cheaper brands. Not cheap in quality, but cheaper in price. Thanks for visiting the top 10 best luggage brands.
Thanks for the informative post about the top 10 best luggage brands in the industry! I have always found it so challenging to decide between the best luggage brands due to the numerous choices we have in the market today. Kudos for stating quality, value and design as the main factors to be considered when deciding on which luggage brand to choose for the various future travel trips.
Kudos for writing short reviews about each of the top 10 luggage brands! I particularly preferred the first brand on the list for good quality at lower-to-mid-range prices and for including soft side and hard side luggage in a variety of bold colors and finishes.
I am glad you enjoyed my top 10 best luggage brands. Yes, Samsonite is probably a very popular brand, and one of the most economical 🙂 Thanks for visiting beach travel destinations.com
Hi. My preferred luggage is Rimowa. Its particular material makes it very attractive and comfortable during the trip. However the other brands aree also very good brands. Usually people choose Samsonite, maybe from the style and fame, but my opinion is that the similar brands are just as good as this one. Nice article.
Rimowa is probably one the top quality luggage brands. Most have not heard of it, but the quality stands out, so the price is going to be a little bit more. Good choice for luggage!
Hello there. Thank you for sharing this awesome post showcasing the top ten best luggage brand. Seriously speaking, it is so so confusing which brand of luggage is the best. I am looking to buy a luggage set for my travels because mine is in bad need of replacement. This article will help. I think I have to go over your list again and determine which one is best for me.
You are very welcome. All of these are great luggage brands. It really just comes down to how much you want to spend, and what features you are looking for in your luggage. Thanks for visiting!
I have always wondered if the hard Samsonite were as good as the soft suitcases because I know some friends and family that swear by them. Big thing for me was I always assumed that they didnt expand but apparently they do by 1.5″ and being hard they would be heavy. The fact they are light weight and have spinner wheels is great when transporting them and moving around an airport.
I have back problems so these suitcases will be ideal for me. Thanks!
Yes they are great 🙂 I have hardside luggage (Delsey) that expands, has spinning wheels, and is pretty lightweight. I love my luggage!
Whenever I am in need of luggage, I buy Samsonite.
I can’t remember when it started (maybe as a child…) but the name brand stuck.
The good thing for me is that Samsonite makes a good line of suitcases at a reasonable price. Glad to see it made your list. 🙂
It is worth spending the money on a good one and not cheapening out on a “no name”. I have seen so many new looking cheap suitcases duct taped or wrapped in plastic by their owners just hoping they can make one more trip. I’ve also seen a suitcase “blow open” when the cheap zipper fails (and that made for quite an embarrassing moment for the owner while waiting in line at an airport).
Yep, I agree! I buy Delsey, I just love the look of Delsey, and they have been a good quality for me. You are right, the no name brands don’t last, especially if you don’t have them as carry on. Any more the luggage is destroyed by the baggage handlers…like in some foreign countries it is just a given. So I do also like the hardside instead of the softside. Just seems to last longer. thanks for visiting the top 10 best luggage brands.
Thanks for this post! I’m going away soon and don’t have a good enough suitcase where the zips aren’t broken. So this post is especially useful!
I am glad I could help. If you have any questions just shoot me a message. Thanks for visiting the Top 10 Best Luggage Brands!
