Tenerife Vacation Guide

Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands and is one of the top warm-weather destinations in Europe. The Spanish islands, the Canaries are a chain of islands in the eastern Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa.  Tenerife is the largest of the seven Canary Islands and boasts the highest peak in Spain – Mt. Teide. The volcano divides the island in two, the Cultural North and the Bustling South. In the lush and tropical north end of the island you will find spanish colonial cities such as the UNESCO world heritage city, La Laguna and fishing village of Garachico.  When traveling to the South you will find golden sand beaches and vibrant coastal towns. The island’s varied topography offers a plethora of options for the adventurer. From beach to forest, explore banana plantation filled valleys, marvel at lunar landscapes, hike through beautiful caverns or try your hand at windsurfing. The four separate microclimates on the island allow for a varied and diverse amount of activities and experiences. Despite the distinct and exotic terrain, you can still travel from one side of the island to the other in less than an hour. At 1265 square miles in size, Tenerife boasts nearly 250 miles of coastline and some 43 miles of beaches. The trip to Tenerife takes between two and four hours by plane from the main Spanish and European airports, and under six hours from the United States, making it convenient and easy to get to.

Tenerife, part of the Canary Islands, is known as the island of eternal spring – temperatures range from 63°-80° year round. Trade winds help the island maintain an ideal temperature and create a natural phenomenon known as A Sea of Clouds that gently push clouds against the hilltops, which causes the air moisture to condense. Tenerife, Canary Islands, has four separate microclimates on the islands, which range from the arid land of the south of the island to the lush tropical landscape of the north shore. Whatever your preference, you’ll be sure to find your ideal climate here. Marvel at Tenerife’s climate contrast by catching the sun on the coast and gazing to the snow-capped peak of Mt. Teide.  Our Tenerife Vacation Guide will give you all the information you need to take a trip to Tenerife- the perfect destination for adventure seekers, romance, families looking for the warm weather destination any time of the year.  Visit the beautiful beaches of Tenerife.

Over the course of a year, the temperature typically varies from 51°F to 77°F and is rarely below 47°F or above 89°F.  The warm season lasts from July 10 to September 27 with an average daily high temperature above 73°F. The hottest day of the year is August 3, with an average high of 77°F and low of 63°F.  The cold season lasts from December 4 to March 12 with an average daily high temperature below 63°F. The coldest day of the year is January 22, with an average low of 51°F and high of 59°F.

There are two airports on the Island of Tenerife.  Tenerife Norte Airport is located is located on the North end of the island, and it is used only for domestic services (to Spain or other Canary Islands) and to Germany. Tenerife South Airport is on the South end of the island, and is closest to most resorts.  Most tourists are heading for the south of the island, and charter and international airlines use Tenerife South Airport. Other than car hire, alternative transport between the two airports is either a taxi which will cost a minimum of €120 each way, or the public bus.  To create a fair watch, go to AirFareWatchDog which will alert you when the flights are going down in price.  Also check my airfare tips on how to make sure you are getting the lowest fare.  For finding the lowest fare, go to CheapFlights.  I find them to be the best for flight comparison, and getting the best deal if you are ready to purchase.  Once you have your airfare, make sure you reserve your airport parking ahead of time.  You can  Save On Airport Parking and not have the last minute hassle (been there) of trying to get parking reserved.

The Sheraton La Caleta Resort & Spa looks like a wonderfull place to stay I would definatley consider this for my wife and my self. Have you been there yourself? Nice work on the Search for the Perfect Hotel section. You seem to be linked up very well with some affiliate business Nice job on this site.

    1. Leahrae (Post author)

  2. Lauren

Wonderful guide! I appreciate that you provided such a wide variety of tips. Seems like an incredible place to vacation…no doubt that I would love to hop on a plane and go right now!!! What are some other islands in the area that you could combine with this destination to make a long trip? Thanks.

    1. Leahrae (Post author)

You can go to some of the other Canary Islands, Grand Canaria, Lanzarote, or La Palma. Thanks for reading!

  3. Martha

Coming from a beach travel destination myself, I have to admit I like the whole concept behind your website. It offers a very interesting and informative setup, apart from having such an attractive outlook. The amount of advertising makes it all so colourful and helpful. It is actually quite inspiring to get anyone to visit the place.

Wish you would one day put the same amount of work on other beach travel destinations… which in my opinion, would definitely make this one of the best travel guide site I have ever visited.

Well done and wish you a whole lot of success.

    1. Leahrae (Post author)

Yes, Martha I plan on it. Just trying to back track and provide travel guides for all the beaches I have covered so far, taking me a while. Thank yo so much for your thoughtful comments.

  4. Jason

This is a great article. I never heard of Tenerife before. I plan to go on a summer vacation with my girlfriend, but I haven’t decided where yet. I wanted to go to somewhere exclusive and warm. This little island seems to be the perfect location that I have been looking for. This will be the next vacation point for me :).

    1. Leahrae (Post author)

And the good thing is prices here are very reasonable, more on the cheap side. So you will get a lot more for your money than other similar destinations.

  5. Josh Lister

Wow! Sounds awesome! I haven’t been to two islands in the Canaries and they are both lovely and warm. Hopefully, I’ll get to Tenerife one day. There seems to be a lot to do. Some decent bars, clubs, water parks, sailing and a Hard Rock Cafe.

  18. Martin

This is a great article and I love Tenerife. I have mainly been to the south of the island and frequented many of the bars you’ve mentioned and been to many of the attractions listed also.

My favorites were the Siam Park, Loro Parque and going up Mt. Teide.

I would also recommend staying at the Iberostar in Costa Adeje which is just down the hill from the retail center. We went all inclusive which was great for fussy eating chilren!

    1. Leahrae (Post author)

Hey Martin, thanks for reading my Tenerife Vacation Guide. I will take your advice and add the Coste Adeje to my list. Always looking for great places that are family friendly as well. Glad you enjoyed!

  19. Joy

This place look like the unique paradise that I have been looking for. Thanks for the great review. I’ve been trying to decide where our next vacation is and after a while they all look the same, but so far this little island is definitely standing out as a gem that I think we may have to consider.

    1. Leahrae (Post author)

It really is a gem. What is nice, is that it is so diverse. You can be on the beach enjoying the surf, sand and sun and then head to Mt. Teide where it will be snowing and the volcano is grumbling. Very beautiful and interesting place. Thanks for visiting the Tenerife Vacation Guide!
