Staying Safe At the Beach

Are you ready to head to the beach? If so, keep in mind that there’s this thing called the Covid-19 coronavirus still spreading. You may have heard about it on the news in between all those reports about the Covid-19 coronavirus. Therefore, just because some beaches are re-opening doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t take the following precautions:

Keep Social distancing

Keep your distance, at least six feet away if not further from everyone else. After all, despite the wind, sun, and waves, don’t forget that the Covid-19 coronavirus may still be around. Also, consider wearing a mask or other facial covering to protect others from you in case you are infected but don’t know it.

Swim Safely

The experts agree that while waterborne transmission of the novel coronavirus may be possible, it’s highly unlikely. The bigger threat, even in the water, is being close enough to an infected person to directly inhale virus particles they exhale, sneeze, or cough. As a precaution, practice social distancing in the water just as you would on land. And avoid swallowing water when swimming.

Be Careful in Public Areas

Plan ahead. Try to minimize what you need to touch. Even in places where beaches have opened, their associated facilities—bathrooms and concession stands—have not. These facilities have many high-touch surfaces—doorknobs, toilet handles, faucets—that increase users’ odds of picking up virus particles on their fingers. Make sure you have some alcohol-based hand wipes handy.

Avoid Touching Your Face; Wash Hands Frequently

Don’t feel the need to touch your head with unwashed hands. Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly. Take along a small-size hand sanitizer.

Don’t Forget Beach Safety

With so much of our energy and attention focused on coronavirus safety, common beach precautions might slip your mind. While most beaches open to swimming are likely to have lifeguards on duty, you still need to swim responsibly. And be careful not to wander too far from the lifeguard-protected zone in an attempt to keep your social distance from other swimmers.

Check the Rules Before You Go

Coronavirus-related requirements for beaches may differ among states—and even among neighboring towns. While some are open for all activities without restriction, others allow beach access only for running, walking, swimming, or fishing but not for lounging or picnicking.

Take Beach Essentials

Going to the beach also means having the essential with you to play and stay safe. Check out our beach essentials here.

Hello Leahrae – Thank you for this very important reminder with precautions regarding the Corona Virus.  I have witness from the news reports that people are being pretty relaxed about taking things slowly and safely.  You wouldn’t think that we are dealing with a deadly virus.  You mentioned that the bathrooms at the beaches aren’t open.  How could that be?  Is that Legal?

I don’t know if it is legal or not, but I know here on Clearwater Beach they are closed.  All beaches here in Florida have restrooms closed.  I think it is just a way of keeping the virus at bay.  I don’t know of the legality but, here in our county they are closed and there are several beaches here in Southern Florida.  Thanks for visiting and taking time to leave me comments.

Yeah, I feel this one’s necessary. I feel too many people are starting to become somewhat reckless with the whole social distancing thing. They’ve probably confused by the idea that everything’s more or less coming off of lockdown now and so probably think it’s over. Glad there is someone out there looking out for people.

Also, I found the section on swimming safety insightful. I hadn’t thought of that. I will keep my distance. Cheers, and stay safe.

You are welcome.  I live on the beach and yeah, people think they are invincible or are just plain being stupid.  There have been protests to open up the bars, I say no.  They can’t follow the current guidelines for heavens sake.  I am glad you found this helpful.

I read your post about Broome Australia and loved your article so I decided to explore your site some more.

It is crazy how we now have to be so conscientious of everything we do during this Covid pandemic. As de-confinement slowly starts to happen all around the world, people may become complacent and I fear for another huge wave of cases and deaths. I think it is a great idea that you write this post during such a “different” time.

Yes, Cynthia and here in Florida we are in the midst of a second wave and the numbers are higher than they were before.  Sad.  All people need to do is follow the guidelines.  At the beach, they are pretty good about it (probably because they are policed 24/7).  But at restaurants, bars, stores, etc, people have forgotten.  And we are certainly not ant the end of the road of this pandemic.  Thanks for visiting beach travel destinations.

Thank you for the warnings, they are vital in ensuring safety when outdoors. Certainly, we are all itching to go out after many weeks of restriction as is evident from the way people are trooping to the beaches to catch the cool breeze and enjoy the waters. While we enjoy this liberty, it is just wise to play safe and keep all recommendations. Better to be alive and well to be able to enjoy more time at the beach.

Agreed!  I live close to the beach, and its sad.  I missed the beach, but if people keep it up, they will close them again.  Our covid-19 are higher now then they were before. 🙁

Hi! Thanks so much for a warm and sweet warning. I wish every body who are travelling will follow the rule. The virus spread faster because people didn’t obey and follow the rule. I’m glad I live in a small town where people are mostly follow the rule. There are no cases in my town, yet, people are very nice and very good in social distances rule. But it’s so hard for some people who want to against the law and so they keep spread the virus. I like the way you write, “it’s short and complete!” Before I traveled a lot, but now I just stay home. But if I go out sometimes, I will remember what you says about the safety rule and read all the sign I see. Thanks again and be safe.

Yes I agree.  Here in Florida, it appears to be close to back to normal at the beaches with everyone acting as if there is no virus.  And now are covid-19 are rising higher than before.  If people would just pay attention and follow the guidelines, it would be better.

Wow the coronavirus has reshaped the way of life! To think that this virus could even be waterbourne is mind blowing – highly unlikely or not. This is just a risk I am not willing to take. But, this post is definitely worth sharing for those who are ready to head to the beach.

I head to the beach when ever the sun is out.  I take my hand sanitizer with me, and I pretty much stay in my space except to cool off in the water.  I don’t know what I’d do if the water was an issue for the virus.  I guess just sit and bake on the beach and look at the water longingly lol.

Thank you for the reminder. Yes, it is still an issue. If we are smart and follow the instructions that you have reminded us of here, then we will be much more likely to be and stay safe. But I got to say that I am so over being ready to get out and go to the beach and to many other places.  Thanks again!

A good post to have at these times… Who knows how long the Coronavirus pandemic will last for and even once people are allowed to start going to beaches again, it will be important to following health and safety protocols for a while. Hopefully this won’t be necessary for too long though…

Yes, so true.  Here on Clearwater Beach it is patrolled pretty heavily, but you still see people who are not following the rules, risking us to go back to lock down 🙁  I appreciate you taking the time to leave me comments.

    Hi

All you propose  is sensible and I can see why they are necessary at the present moment. I think that social distancing I’d now the new norm and I fear that people will be reluctant to go, after all  we all do  not want a second outbreak costing more lives. I cannot imagine people using  masks on the beach as it can spoil the tan look. I think it would be funny if people people walk around with a half brown and half white face. If we keep everything sensible and avoid overcrowding then everything should be fine.

I think that  changing facilities  and toilets will be severely affected and that people cannot get changed whilst there unless you actually do it at the beach. Do you think those who flaunt the rules should be fined or something worse?

    Thanks

    Antonio

I know here on Clearwater Beach, the police patrol the beach 24/7….seems pretty boring to me LOL.  But I have noticed that on the beach, people are pretty much following the rules and there are less people on the beach.  That being said, I have no fear when I head to the beach.  I wear a swimsuit cover up and then just put it back on when I leave.  I do take hand sanitizer and yes, I have to admit that I don’t wear a mask.  But I am in my own 6′ space.
