Goleta Vacations

You want to go to a place that beckons with adventure and discovery. A place that offers epic days full of enjoyment that end with feet kicked up as the sun sinks low. A place that is on the coast and down to earth, with wide-open beaches and hidden gems. Welcome to Goleta Vacations — where you GO for fun!

This attractive beach community has been called “the jewel in the crown” of the Santa Barbara coast. It is renowned for its typically sunny weather, while the fog that shrouds its well-to-do neighbor is rarely in evidence. The town happens to be the geographic location of both the University of California campus and the airport that serves the nearby city. Seals are rare on Southern California beaches, but you’ll find them here.

The 9 acre Coronado Butterfly Preserve and the Ellwood Main Monarch Grove, for which it serves as a gateway, are among the best locales to see the beauteous orange and black insects. Massive numbers of monarchs fly up to 3,000 miles to roost in the coastal eucalyptus trees; birds and wildlife also thrive here. The best viewing is between December and February.

Enjoy the many wonderful beaches of Goleta, (you’ll find a list here), then come visit Goleta.  Our Goleta Vacations guide has all your answers to start planning your beach vacation.  Just keep reading!

It’s refreshing, Leahrae, to see that in a coastal resource such as the lovely Goleta, activities are organised and catered for non-water lovers too, such as myself. Don’t get me wrong, I would love, I am sure, the stunning sightseeing of Goleta coast. But activities wise, I am pleased to hear that there are plenty of non-water based ones to do too.
What impresses me also is the number of relatively affordable restaurants. Santa Barbara area is renowned for being extremely costly. But Goleta seems to be affordable without missing out on outstanding natural beauty. My only concern would be the high levels of tourism. So, I guess, for me it would have to be in the Autumn months I would have to visit.
Thank you, Leahrae, for once again making me dream 🙂

You are welcome Giulia! You will find that the tourism here is not near as busy as Santa Barbara. And you are right, it is much more economical and just as beautiful with so many things to see. It’s a paradise for anyone, even the non beach lover 🙂 Thanks for reading Goleta Vacations.

    Leahrae,
Visiting the butterflies and tent camping on the beach would be my two favorites things in the Goleta beach area. Having several choices for biking or whale watching should also be on my list when visiting this area. Thanks for the information and inspiration to visit California beaches.

Just like one of the previous comments says, I also feel like I’ve been on a vacation after reading your great post. So much useful and insightful information! The butterfly grove looks so amazing! I’d love to take my children to see it. It’s great to know there is a really good selection of accommodation on offer. However, my favorite is your suggestion to just pitch a tent on the beach and enjoy the weekend! Great!

    Hi, Leahrae,

This is my place:) I like being in nature. Goleta is not this type of overbuilt, and full of big hotels resort! You can go camping, go to the butterfly grove, and visit a real museum!

Boy, I think they would really like the Monarch Butterfly grove. I am not sure how old they are, but most kids love wildlife. Also the Coal Oil Point reserve is interesting. My kids have always love playing at the beach, frolicking in the water, and making sand castles 🙂 Lotusland would be another great choice for families with kids. Looks like a beautiful place with plenty of things to do! I was drawn to the M. Special Brewing Company as I enjoy a good draft beer especially after spending a nice, warm day on the beach.

I’ve always wanted to try paddle boarding as it looks like a lot of fun. Is Goleta considered a tourist attraction or are local residents involved with all of the features that are offered? The reason I ask has to do with the students who attend the University of California and just wandering how much action Goleta receives from the college students.

You certainly have provided great detail in your article from when to go, where to stay, what to do, where to eat, etc. Thank you for sharing this article! You have taken out a lot of the guess work in planning for a vacation to Goleta.

Goleta is really just an extension of the Santa Barbara area, so you will find the college students everywhere. But, Goleta is probably a LOT more of a tourist town than other areas and would be quite enjoyable for sure. I am glad you enjoyed reading about Goleta Vacations. Thanks for stopping by!

Wow, the butterfly grove looks amazing. I had no idea something like that existed out in the wild of California. I’ve always wanted to see a mass migration of butterflies, but the closest I’ve gotten is the exhibit at the Chicago zoo (which was still cool)!

This looks like a wonderful option and far more accessible than trying to make my way to Central or South America. Are there any specific things you need to do in precaution of visiting the butterfly park? I’ve heard recently they are starting to try and minimize visitors and stop them from bringing any type of bug spray etc nearby the butterflies. Just wanted to know in advance!”

They only ask to not touch or harass the butterflies, or make any loud noises. That is pretty much the only things to know in advance 🙂 You will absolutely love the place! Thanks for visiting Goleta Vacations.

I love to travel and beaches are my favorite destinations. We have a travel trailer and we would definitely look for a campground. How is the water temperature there? I’m more used to the water of the Gulf of Mexico, where the water is pretty warm in summer time, and it’s pretty shallow too. I imagine in Santa Barbara the water is more frigid?
Also, what about fires? Would that affect our beach vacation?

    Reply
    1. Leahrae (Post author)

Yes, I live on the Gulf so I know what you are talking about. Our water temperature sits around 82 degrees in the summer. It’s going to be about 72 in the summer in the Pacific. Really that is not too bad at all. Thanks for reading !

I hope to check this place out in September. My husband and I usually travel on the last week of September since its the week of my birthday. And also because it’s cheaper 🙂

For some reason, I keep seeing butterflies in the water when thinking about going there. I wonder how many monarchs attempt the trip and how many come up just short of getting there. Goleta vacations sound like a pleasure if you want to go in the fall or even before spring to see the butterflies.
