Cat Island Travel

Cat Island travel is going to bring you a pristine world to your senses. With it’s natural beauty, and its laid-back environment, it provides a unique destination to relax and unwind. And with 50 miles of rolling hills, endless nature trails and the eight-mile Pink Sand Beach, visitors can choose to do everything or absolutely nothing at all.

What makes Cat Island unique is that it is untainted and unspoiled, and there is much to be discovered on Cat Island. Named after the infamous pirate, Arthur Catt, the island runs deep with history and culture. Its 150 square miles of natural landscape offer every traveler a rich Bahamian experience. You’ll find the plot of land where Sir Sidney Poitier’s boyhood home once stood. You’ll also discover the birthplace of The Bahamas’ indigenous rake and scrape music, along with numerous myths and folklore that still hold a place in Bahamian culture today. The island is also home to one of the best climates in The Bahamas. Its location near the Tropic of Cancer means temperatures range from the mid-60s in the short winters to the high-80s in the summer, which make it perfect for getting out and exploring Cat Island’s untouched landscape and rich history.   For more information on the best beaches on Cat Island, visit The Best Beaches in the Bahamas Guide.

The hottest month in Cat Island is August when the average maximum temperature is 91°, average temperature is 86° and average minimum temperature is 81°.  The coolest month in Cat Island is January when the average maximum temperature is 79°, average temperature is 72° and average minimum temperature is 66°.  September to May is the most popular time for visitors to Cat Island, when temperatures average from 70 to 75 degrees a day. Nighttime temperatures cool down by just 5 to 7 degrees. Seasons may vary widely in other vacation destinations, but that’s not the case in The Bahamas. Even the rainy season — May through November — rarely offers challenges for visitors. Even the occasional tropical rainstorm is usually short-lived. In fact, The Bahamas have about 340 sunny days a year, and, according to astronauts, the clearest waters in the Caribbean region.

Because of the tropical climate, you can fish, dive and snorkel year-round. You also can comfortably swim in the ocean, as water temperature in The Bahamas rarely dips below 72 degrees (22 degrees Celsius) near the shorelines.

Getting to Cat Island

There are two airports serving Cat Island: Arthur’s Town Airport (ATC) and New Bight Airport (TBI). Frequent domestic and international service is available via scheduled and charter airlines. Instead, vacationers traveling by air must show proof of citizenship and identification. Typically, guests must present a birth certificate and a government-issued photo identification in order to enter the Bahamas, according to the United States Department of State (  Although a United States passport is not required to enter the Bahamas, Americas will be required to present their valid passport upon returning to the United States. When flying to and from the Bahamas, many airlines require guests to show their U.S. passport.   Receive Low Fare Alerts for Flights with Airfarewatchdog

Visiting boaters must clear Customs and Immigration at the nearest designated Official Port of Entry—Bennett’s Harbour and Smith’s Bay. As you enter port, fly the yellow quarantine flag and notify Customs of your arrival. No one other than the captain is permitted to leave the boat until your vessel has been cleared. Hawk’s Nest Resort in the south has the only marina on the island providing fuel, electricity, showers, water, a restaurant and supply shop.

Getting Around Cat Island

The best way to get around Cat Island is to rent a car and go off on your own. Limited taxi service is also available and you can call for one or pick one up at the airports. Although metered rates vary by island, they are reasonable and are fixed by law. Surcharges often apply for more than two persons and extra luggage. Suggested tip is 15% of fare.  You must be 21 years old and possess a valid driver’s license for all rentals. Visitors may use their home driver’s license for up to three months or can apply for an international driver’s license if staying with us longer. But remember, when you take to the road, please keep to the left. Pedestrians should remember to first look right and then left before crossing streets.  Avis is the best rental car company on for getting around on Cat Island.

This small, stone, medieval-style monastery sits on the peak of Como Hill on Cat Island, the highest point in The Islands of The Bahamas at 206 foot above sea level. It was built in 1939 by a Roman Catholic priest, Monsignor John Hawes, known to locals as Father Jerome. An admirer of St. Francis of Assisi, Father Jerome called the getaway Mount Alvernia, after La Verna, a mountain in Tuscany that was given to Assisi as a place where he could peacefully contemplate, and it was where Assisi received the Wounds of the Cross.

A skilled architect and sculptor and self-described contemplative, Father Jerome built this retreat so that he could get away from the world. Going up the hill to the monastery, visitors will sense his religious devotion and see his beautiful and detailed work, including hand-carved stone reliefs of the Stations of the Cross.  For More Information, Contact:  Administrator’s Office-South Cat Island at 242-342-3032.

    Fantastic article!

My sister has been in Cat island, and you know what, she stayed in the Orange Greek Inn. She showed us beautiful pictures of Cat Islands. She went there to celebrate her honeymoon. I wish I could be there now! However, she enjoyed so much that she and her husband didn’t want to come back. They even start to plan to spend the rest of their life there:) But once they came back, things got back to normal:)  I will show her this article. I am sure she will go crazy:)  Thank you for this excellent article!

    1. Leahrae (Post author)

I am so glad you enjoyed reading more on Cat Island.  I am sure that it does not compare to being there as your sister was for her honeymoon. What a wonderful destination to start the beginning of a marriage!  I could see myself living there permanently as well.  Anywhere with such beautiful beaches, culture and people!

  2. Kyle Green

This place looks beautiful! I had been researching Cat Island and glad I found your post.  I am ready to go right now after reading! Its getting cold where I live. The weather seems amazing year round. I would love to live in a place that has weather like that year round. The restaurants seems really cool and located in awesome places with great views. I would love to go diving and take the catamaran, those are always fun! I will bookmark your site and use the information when I am ready to plan my vacation!

Another fantastic article. If I had a chance to go to Cat Island I would choose the Mail Boat from Nassau.

It’s amazing how many people have commented that they had never heard of Cat Island! I am a travel agent and of course I have NEVER heard of it either!

It’s so good to know about these places that are off the beaten track because when visitors go back to the same place over and over, they want to find something different to do. This is perfect for people returning to Nassau.

    1. Leahrae (Post author)

Wow, I cannot believe that you have not heard of Cat Island.  It is a wonderful pick, and of course less crowded than some of the other Caribbean islands.  And yes, great pick if you are headed to Nassau.  thanks for visiting Cat Island Travel 🙂

  4. Veronica

And why did you have to include that video!!! I live in New York City…needless to say, my view is slightly different, lol. I think that may be a video I’ll have to watch repeatedly.

    1. Leahrae (Post author)

It is a great video!  I would love to visit New York as well!  On my bucket list for sure.  Been there once, but it was for a competition so didn’t get to do anything really.  Yes, you are correct with Deans Blue Hole.  Quite amazing.  Thanks for visiting Cat Island Travel!

I never knew about Cat Island, but I now know it is on my must visit list. You gave us a nice sense of the history, the culture, the places to dine and the things to do, and the descriptions put a yearning to visit in my mind. I did not know it was a left side driving environment.  Your tip for pedestrians, to look right left right before crossing the road was spot on.  Great information!

    1. Leahrae (Post author)

Yes, Cat Island is one of those places that a lot of people are not aware of.  This is what makes it a nice destination to travel to, without all the excess crowds to deal with 🙂  I don’t know what more anyone could want, sunshine, great beaches, and very little crowds.  Thanks for reading Robert!

  8. Homies (One of the sites I'm building)

    Hi Matty’s Mom,

Hubby and I traveled to the Bahamas when our children were young. Unfortunately, they were too small to appreciate all the islands had to offer.

I loved the water and how amazingly beautiful it was.

We would love to travel again soon, but being empty nesters  we have to save up to do anything. Hopefully soon we’ll be able to get moving. I’d love to visit the Bahamas again and hit the casino beach; which was one of the best parts of the trip. We didn’t do any gambling, we just visited the area behind the casino.
    Amazing, just amazing.

    Thank you for the information,

    1. Leahrae (Post author)

Yes, amazing is right for sure!  When you get ready to go again, let me know and I can help you find some great deals 🙂  Thanks for visiting!

    1. Leahrae (Post author)

Yes, I think it is always worth while to stay in higher end places.  After all we are on vacation right?  🙂

When the time is right for me to start traveling all over the world, I will most definitely pay Cat Island a visit. Thanks again!!!

    1. Leahrae (Post author)

I love seafood too, and it goes without saying that in the Bahamas you have to eat the seafood and the Bahamian food for sure.  As a beach bum and a foodie, I just think you can’t go wrong anywhere in the Bahamas.
