The Most Amazing Beaches of Greece

Check out the most amazing beaches of Greece, with one of the longest coastlines in the world at almost 16 km. The mainland and island areas end in a myriad variety of coastlines, with countless beautiful small beaches, charming bays and coves. Half of this length includes the thousands of Greek islands scattered through the Greek seas, while the rest extends along the mainland.

The Greek shores are world-famous and exceedingly popular because they are known for their crystal clean and clear waters, as well as for their unique diversity. Visitors have the opportunity to enjoy beaches stretching along over many kilometers, sheltered bays and coves, golden stretches of sand with dunes, pebble beaches, coastal caves with steep rocks and dark sand typical of volcanic soil.

It’s difficult to choose the best beaches in Greece. What’s the best beach for kids? What’s the best beach for swimming? What’s the best beach for partying? What’s the best beach for snorkeling?  Everyone is looking for a great beach, but they all have different criteria. Add to that the fact that many islands have upwards of 20 different beaches.  In Greece about 400 beaches and 9 marinas have been awarded the Blue Flag; this number rises each year, a true indication of the Greeks’ love and regard for the sea.  See all the most amazing beaches of Greece on our PInterest site Here. Elafonisi, Crete

Elafonissi is something like an island and a peninsula, because to reach the island you have to walk through the sea.  It is located in the southwest end of the prefecture of Chania, Crete, about 70km from the city of Chania.  There isn’t much else nearby besides a few small hotels, so most people do a day trip from Chania.  Elafonisi is a place of an exceptional natural beauty, and it has been included in the Natura 2000 Protection Program. Someone could say that nature made it’s wonder in Elafonisi.  That’s why Elafonissi beach is such a popular destination in and around Chania, and a top of the top things to do from all over Crete.

What characterizes the area of Elafonissos and makes it such an exotic place, are the little sand islets formed, the shallow turquoise waters of the sea, which at a point looks like a lagoon, and certainly the fine white sand, pinkish at several spots because of the crushed shell powder.  The whole area is an endless summer playground for young and old alike.  Find the best luxury hotels to book in Crete here.

Red Beach, Santorini

Santorini has some of the most unique beaches in Greece. The red beach is arguably one of the most famous and beautiful beaches of Santorini. It is located only some steps away from the ancient site of Akrotiri. The small size of the beach creates a much-crowded atmosphere and there are many days where most of the visitors choose not to make it all the way down to the beach and instead admire this unique landscape of red and black volcanic rocks from the headland. The sand isn’t of the soft white sand variety. Most is composed of volcanic sand and is red, black, or grey. The access is relatively easy. You can leave your car at the parking space and continue all the way down that takes about two minutes. As you gradually get down to the beach you will be impressed by the different colorings of the cliffs.  Many sunbeds and umbrellas cover the dark sand and right on the seashore are some nice pebbles you can use for your collection. Snorkeling is highly recommended due to the interesting rocks. You can also access the beach by boat that departs from Akrotiri port.  For information on the best luxury hotels in Santorini, visit here.

Greece looks absolutely amazing. The water is so tranquil and blue and the sandy beaches look so warm and inviting. I would love to travel there in the near future. Unlike many beach destinations, few can match the history of Greece. Literally the birthplace of democracy and many of the laws and ideas we take for granted today.

All the beaches look amazing! I’ve been wanting to go to Greece for years, particularly Santorini. By the way, is it too expensive to go there? What is the nearest airport? I’d like to plan my visit and make a budget.

If I had to choose just one beach, I’d go for Mylopotas Beach. It looks like some beaches in Acapulco, Mexico.

Oh, one more thing. What beach do you recommend for watching the sunset? I love taking pictures of it.

    Thanks for sharing.

Ok, yes Santorini is expensive for a vacation.  Probably twice as much to vacation there than Athens.  You could stay in Athens and head to Santorini for day trips and what not.  The closest airport is in Santorini.  I know you will enjoy, and yes don’t miss out on Mylopotas Beach!

Thank you for the introduction to so many of Greece’s beautiful beaches. I found it interesting to see how neatly the umbrellas were lined up on the beaches. They are broad expanses of sand for many to enjoy! I don’t know if I like the ones with the towns close by, or the more remote beaches. It would be nice to go for an extended vacation and enjoy them all!

The best time for the best beaches in Greece to visit is spring and early summer (mid-Apr to mid-June) or autumn (Sept to mid-Oct). This way, you’ll avoid the summer high season, with its inflated prices, hordes of tourists and high temperatures. Yet, it will still be very nice there.

Wow, Greece is such an exotic country isn’t it? Other than its beaches, I heard that there are lot of historical sites that we can visit as well. Would make the trip much more fulfilling.

In this list, the Vouliagmeni beach appeals to me the most, as it seems very family oriented, filled with facilities that even the kids would enjoy as well. Is there enough parking space for cars as well?

Thanks, and awesome review as usual!

Yes, that is a good choice for a beach, and yes the parking would not be a worry. Only worry would be where to lay your towel! And I agree, so much history on top of being so beautiful! A must do for a great beach travel destination!

I’ve been to a whole load of countries around the world and I’ve seen my fair share of spectacular beaches, but I’m yet to step foot in Greece. Some of these beaches look stunning – I’d love to go to Greece for a party week or something with some friends at some point. Mylopotas Beach looks great!

It’s always the price that is a big deterrent, though. How much would you estimate a beach holiday in Greece for a week in a beach resort would cost on average?

Well this is totally dependent on where you are flying from and when and where in Greece you are flying to. It can be any where from about $1500 for the week to Mykonos upward depending on your selection of hotel. Thanks for looking and if you ever need a firm quote, I would be happy to help 🙂

I’ll admit that I’m not all that into the beach (I don’t really like sand and I don’t like swimming in big water) but these locations look absolutely stunning. If Greece were a much nicer place to be overall, I’d go there in a heart beat. I love to travel and one of my favorite things about traveling is seeing beautiful locations and areas.
