Bahia de los Angeles

Bahia de los Angeles is a scenic fishing village located roughly midway down the Baja California Peninsula.  Bahia de los Angeles, or the “Bay of the Angels” offers a stark desert set against the backdrop of the Sea of Cortez. Spectacular sunrises are just one of the unforgettable sights you will see. Fishing is a main attraction, as are Whale Sharks, gentle giants which frequent the bay during the warm summer months.

Bahia de Los Angeles is a sportsman’s paradise. Fishermen will find Corvina, Grouper, Barracuda, Sea bass, Yellowtail, and the occasional Marlin, to name just a few. In addition, you can dig for clams or dive for lobster, oyster or scallops.  Or, take advantage of the excellent wind conditions and enjoy exciting watersports such as water skiing, sailing or windsurfing. Enjoy sight seeing? Rent a boat to cruise around the more than 15 islands in the bay where you will find a great variety of birds, sea lions, dolphins and, native fin back whales. Hiking, mountain biking, and off-roading are excellent ways to enjoy the natural beauty of Bahia de Los Angeles. The warm balmy nights of Bahia de Los Angeles invite you to stroll along the beach, or just kick back on a lounge and gaze at the stars.

The surrounding desert offers unique destinations, including Montevideo (Indian Paintings), the Mission San Francisco de Borja, the 10,000-year old Indias de Montevideo rock paintings, and the Museo (Museum).   The museum presents both history and a collection of art craft of the local Indians and the Central Desert of Baja.  Here you can immerse yourself in all Bahia de los Angeles has to offer.  It is a small fishing village, so no hotels in the area.  Bahia de los Angeles is a good day trip to see the sights and enjoy the beaches.    For Bahia de los Angeles beach locations and information on each beach, click here.

Bahia de los Angeles Weather – When to Visit

The best time to visit Bahia de los Angeles is from May to June, when the wintertime crowds have gone home and the summertime storms have yet to hit. October and November are also nice months for a vacation, but you’ll need to begin your hotel search early if you want to save money. It could be that your motivation for visiting is not the beach: If you’re into whale watching, plan to visit between mid-December and mid-April. If you like to fish, look to come in the late summer or fall. Keep in mind: Pacific hurricane season runs from mid-May to November. Though Bahia de los Angeles typically only experiences tropical storms during the hurricane season, the city has seen hurricanes make landfall in the region, most notably Hurricane Odile in 2014.

I am a scuba diver and I have travelled to San Diego for some great diving. The reason I went was to harvest the abalone in the area. Is there still a season for abalone? You said something about scallops and lobsters. I spent several days on a dive ship in that area, I had a blast. Do you set up or schedule SCUBA dive trips in this area?
    Thanks for your time.

Yes, Bobby, there is also abalone in the area. I guess will go back and update my post to add it to the list of what you can catch as it is prevalent here. Thanks for reading!

My wife and I would really like to begin our travels, can you help? We are getting closer to our retirement years and would love to search out different places that are warm with lots of sun and sand. I traveled to San Diego several years ago to do some diving of the coast of California and just fell in love with that area. Is there a place you recommend for a couple with a teenager child can travel and keep the scenery rated G? We would also like a recommendation for just the two of us to travel and have others take care of us as we do absolutely nothing.
Great site, I will check back for more information. Thanks

I have a teenage son to and he always seems to find lots to do, but then he loves the beach like I do and he loves to surf. Matter of fact he teaches surfing, so it is easy to not worry about him having fun. Please email me and let me know what area you are interested in going to. There are so many places that would be great and I am not sure if you were thinking of just Mexico, or if you would consider other great beach destinations. I can help you once, I know what area you are looking at 🙂 Thanks!

    Hi Lea,

Awesome article as usual:) I love reading your articles, they are so useful, and I always find all the information I need to plan my holidays.
The Bay of the Angel suit so well to the place as it looks beautiful in the picture!
I’ve been a few times in Los Angeles to visit my family, more precisely in Beverly hills. Next time I’ll travel there, I will definitely visit Bahia De Los Angeles.
Just a question, please. When do you think it’s the best time to see these beautiful whales sharks in the water?
I’ve never seen them in reality, and I would love to:)
    Thank you in advance!

What a beautiful beach. I truly appreciate the information on a spot I have always wanted to visit. Thank you for the restaurant guide! I always want to check out the food anytime I travel. Please tell me, how does this area of Baja compare to SW Florida? My favorite time to visit SW Florida is in the fall, when it is not so muggy, the ocean is still warm, and the humidity is a bit lower. What would be the best time to visit to enjoy similar conditions?

You know I have been to the Baja many times and I live in SW Florida, so the weather is pretty comparable.  I would visit in August thru October for a climate that is less muggy and not so hot.  That has always been the best time to travel for me.  Thanks for visiting BeachTravelDestinations.com

I am SO bookmarking your website! This is all really great information, and I especially appreciate your info about other things to do. I love the beach, but my husband needs convincing; says he needs something more than just sitting around getting sunburned! We don’t take that many vacations, so when we do, I want them to be special. You’ve given me some great options to consider! Thanks!
